I cannot begin to tell you how many times I had to justify my diet. The reason for the lifestyle I live. How many times I had to explain to people about the inflammation issues I face, the gluten headaches, the pains, and the emotional distress related to a diet that just doesn’t work for me…or any of the other people who suffer with so many similar ailments, for that matter. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I said the words “Screw You” in my head when face to face with someone who “just doesn’t get it”.
Many people want to believe that this gluten free diet is a fad, or just another way of losing weight. The truth is that people who are true gluten free thrivers do it for a purpose. It’s a dietary lifestyle for those that need it, not want it. It is a decision that has been made after many visits to the doctors, after too many procedures, and invasive tests that were sometimes inconclusive, and other times showed inflammation of the colon and gut. Tests that showed a positive result for an autoimmune disease like Celiac, Hashimoto Thyroiditis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and so many others. How many times the doctors suggested a life full of medications. These are all reasons people change their diet.
Regardless of the reason, it is not a reason to have to justify your decision to anyone. Your decision is just that…YOUR DECISION! Screw the non-believers! If you feel good. If your colon has lost the inflammation and if your energy level is back, then who cares?! Friends, family, and loved ones will support you. Colleagues will understand. And all the others will question it, yet may show some curiosity. Go with it. Welcome it all. Stay strong in your convictions. In your dedication to your health and well-being.
This gluten free craze is one that you can thank. It has helped you feel better. Eating naturally gluten free gives your body all the nutrients your body was lacking before your diagnosis. You were missing so much in the food you were eating. In fact, the food was just that…food. It was nothing healthy since you weren’t digesting the necessary vitamins, fiber, and proteins. And now you are thriving!
So, let them talk! Let them call you a fad-dieter. Let them watch you eat your fruits, and veggies, and fresh meats while they ingest their processed breads, and cakes, and frozen meals. Love the haters! They give you more of a reason to continue on your health journey. You will be the one smiling, full of energy and thoroughly enjoying life. Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!
