We all love quick and easy meals that we can grab and go. Meals that are mindless. Ones that can be pulled out of the freezer, placed in the lunch bag and brought to work without a thought about it until lunch time. There are some things to think about, though, before you make the unconscious decision to pack them up.
Being gluten free doesn’t only mean not eating food with gluten. Many times it means staying away from over-processed foods with preservatives and additives. Going beyond the idea of just needing to stay away from the bread is the idea of veering only towards whole, fresh foods that go bad if you leave them out. Food that wilts, rots, or inevitably will attract bugs if they get moldy. As gross as that may sound, that is the type of food that you should be eating…and by everyone. Not just gluten free thrivers. In this sense, when you go food shopping, shop the perimeter of the store. This means you should visit the produce, meat, fish, whole grains, and dairy aisles (if you are not vegan).
If you somehow feel the need to get the quick fix of frozen meals that are calling your name, do yourself a favor and stick to the brands that are more natural. Research brands and products that are healthy and void of as many chemicals and preservatives as possible. They will mess with your stomach and cause pains, nausea, and other ailments that just aren’t worth the purchase of the chemicals kept frozen in a box.
With that said, there are some frozen foods that are worthwhile and tasty. Over the course of 8 years, I have tested lots of different brands. It takes time to form opinions on different brands of foods, so I am going to make it a little easier for you. Your welcome.
Here is a small list of some of the more natural and good-for-you frozen foods that I have tasted and enjoyed…in moderation:
- Dr. Praegers Spinach Pancakes
- Organic Sunshine Burgers
- Qrunch Burgers
- Udi’s Pizza
- Tres Pupusas
- My Gluten Free Cafe
- Garden Lites Spinach Souffle
- Amy’s Rice Mac and Cheeze
Like anything else you buy, read the labels first. Frozen foods tend to have an abundance of sodium and preservatives. The point of being on a gluten free diet is to improve the quality of your body and to help it function more fluidly. Ingesting food that is loaded with, well, crap, is going to have an adverse affect. So, stay focused on the direction of health, and eat these foods every now and then. Your one and only body will thank you for it.
